Rudders

Nollind (and all),

You can check three places. Chris Keitel in Florida has made some and was talking about making a mold and making more if there was some interest. Gene Adams of Port Gardner Sailboats (206 778-0336)in western Washington state has supplied some people with rudder blades - he ownes the molds and rights to San Juan boats, and you may check with Fred Rehm in Camden, SC (803 432-4301) if he knows if any are available. I don't have the current phone number for Chris Keitel, but you might check on Switchboard.com for it.

Several of us have made rudders, myself and Ben Sanders for instance, and have enjoyed the job as a winter project. I've made several, starting first with western red cedar for the core, but found that too bendy. I glued up expensive mahogony for one, but this last I made with clear, vertical grain douglas fir. A heavy wood makes no difference, since they want to float up out of the gudgeons anyway! We can give you more information if you're interested.
