I noticed that the hardware on my 1975 SJ21 was set on the deck in a bead of caulk. Over the years the caulk has started to craack and peel. I was wondering if anyone ever used any type of gasket material, or heard of material used for mounting hardware...cleats, brackets, stays etc. I plan on removing most of the stuff this winter and wonder if I should just clean the surface..removing the old caulk and then re-caulking and bolting the stuff back on...or would it makes sense to use some type of rubber gasket material before putting everything back together. I figure it would be easy enough to set down a thin piece of gasket ..bolt the hardware on and then trim the extra off.
