Tracing Irregular Shapes

A a young boy, my father taught me his trick for trans- fering irregular patterns. It is a follows: Use a circular disk with a pin hole at its center. Roll the disk along the irregular shape, with a pencil in the hole marking on a piece of pattern stock cut roughly the shape in work; within the radius of the disk of the ahape being copied. Once a mark has been transfered to the pattern stock, trim along that line. You now have the shape desired, but it is the radius of the disk smaller than you want. Repeat the process, using the first pattern, rolling the same disk along the contour, to create a second contour the same size as the object that you want to copy. Differnet jobs will require different size disks. Coffee can lids work for most jobs. My farther has always been smarter that I am. Why, it took me many years to even realize it.
