Canadian Nationals 2001

The dates of this summer's Canadian Nationals have been set: Thursday, July 19 (registration, practise race) to Sunday, July 22 (flex day).

In response to the wishes of our U.S. Northwest confreres, we have elected to race on Friday/Saturday and use jibs/mains and spinnakers - no genoas.

The regatta will be held in Calgary, on the local resevoir. It's right in the heart of city, where fleet 28 resides. (City bi-laws prohibit motors.)

Reasons why you should come:

*Location...Calgary is a mere 60 miles from The Rockies, and only 70 from the world famous, "World Heritage Site," Banff National Park. Calgary is a clean, safe, prosperous city of about 900,000 people. (We're about 150 miles north of Montana.) There's plenty to do for non-sailers, too, i.e., an excellent symphony orchestra, museums, beautiful zoo (with a unique Dinosaur Park), and a hundred miles of bike paths. And, on the banks of the resevoir itself, is Heritage Park, a magnificent recreated old prairie town with authentic, relocated buildings, an antique amusement park and padddle wheel ship. (Sailors: watch out for its wind deflections when racing, but be sure to wave to the tourists who will think you're a local.) Our regatta banquet will be held at this park.

*Our fleet is up to 13 Sj 21s.

*Weather...Okay, I may be on shaky grounds here, but, usually, July offers daytimes highs in the mid twenties. Wait! That's celcius. Translation: low/mid eighties farenheit. And, we're the sunniest major city in Canada.

*Atmosphere...Fleet 28 may well have more fun than any other. You'll find the atmosphere infectious. (We even meet regularly through the winter.)

*Anyone can win!...While admittedly the resevoir is tiny and has unbelievably fluky winds, this means that just about anybody can win a race - even if the better sailors can be expected to come out on top overall. (Behind at the first mark? Just round, get your chute up, and wait for the almost inevitable, infamous "Losers' Gusts." In no time, you'll be ready to hop The Frog's transom - assuming the Vander Schalies return.)

*Accomodation...Although there is no camping at the club, visitors will be welcome to stay in the clubhouse. It's located on parkland which surrounds the resevoir, and is only a 2 minute walk to a small plaza with restaurants and a convenience store. Locals will also be glad to put people up. (There is a KOA on the city limits, about a 15 minute drive from the venue. Hotels, including a Holiday Inn, are closer.)

* Your U.S. dollars mean you pay about 33% less than posted prices.

We'll get a website going shortly. In the meantime watch the bulletin board for updates.
