subject:Do mast step positions vary?
In the last Jib Sheet, our Chief Measurer, Bill McClure, noted that the aft edge of the mast should be 98.5 inches minimum from the stem head fitting, and 102 inches maximum. In a message to me, he clarified that 1971/2 boats were at 102, while all that followed were at 98.5. (The change was made to make it easier to hoist and lower masts.)Chris Keitel, whom as most of you in the SE know is well experienced working on San Juan 21s, believes that there is some variance between boats. (And, could there have been less attention to measurement tolerances in east vs. west coast plants?)
John Vander Schalie has measured Kermit, and it precisely conforms to Bill's measurement guideline for post 1972 boats.
I'll get around to measuring mine - as soon as I can round up someone to help me manage this despite a very tight fitting tarp (it snows up here in winter; imagine that!).
In the meantime, comments from others would be appreciated.
Steve
