Tiller autopilots don't seem to fit

I'm looking at tiller auto pilots. I have looked at both the Simrad tp10 and the Ray Marine ST1000+. My boat is the MKII model.

The instructions for both of these say that to install the tiller autopilot you need to center the tiller and measure 18 inches from the rudder pin. Then at a 90 degree angle from that on the starboard side you need to measure out 23.5 inches. This is where you are to drill a hole in the seat to mount the tiller pilot post that the tiller pilot sits on.

However, I hit the side at more or less exactly 23.5 inches. This means the tiller pilot won't fit there because there isn't room to drill the hole and have the back end of the autopilot have space to swivel. Basically, the tiller pilot is too long for the size of the boat.

Ray Marine has some attachments to deal with some sizing issues, but not a "tiller pilot is too long" situation.

Anyone run into this problem ?

Are there some other tiller autopilots that will fit in the dimensions of the boat ?

I'd like to get the Ray Marine ST1000+ but they make a big deal about how important the measurements are and it just doesn't seem to fit in the boat.

Thanks
