"Boom problem"

Bill,

Several years ago I snapped off one of the cast aluminum "ears" you are talking about, when I released the forestay and lowered the mast back onto my shoulder at about a 45 degree angle to get under a nonfunctioning drawbridge--but forgot to remove the boom, so the acute angle between the boom and the mast snapped off the "ear." (Hope no one else is as dumb!) A risky trick to try away from shore, but I was determined to get on the lake that day!

I temporarily tied a line around the mast to anchor the tack of the sail, then later hired a local blacksmith to weld on a new "ear." He was not sure he could do it (welding on cast aluminum) very well, but his $25 repair is still as good as new 3 years later. Hope that is helpful.
