Mast base plate

I just removed the base plate from my mast so I could add a perforated bar for blocks on each side. When the 2 screws came out, I tried to thread them back in loosely so they wouldn't get lost. I discovered that they won't screw back in - the threaded nuts or plate behind isn't there! I didn't hear it fall, so maybe it just moved back so I can't catch the threads.

Can anyone tell me what's inside the mast and how I might put this back together. Right now it looks like I may have to remove the rivets on the sides and replace them after assembly.

Merry Christmas to Juan and all. By the way, am I the most northerly Juan?
