From previous questions pertaining to outboard HP I think the 2.5 should be enough for a lake environment. ( no current) Make sure you get a long shaft version though, otherwise when the crew goes forward, the prop will come out of the water.I have an older 1986 4 H.P. on mine -- but then I'm on river with 1 kt currents at times. It's on the heavy side too.
