Joe Downing mentioned that looser shrouds allow more forward mast bend/movement downwind. True, but rules say the mast can't extend more than 90 degrees. I believe that with typical tuning and the backstay all off, the masts get to that point anyhow. Anyone else want to comment? As for jibs, spinnakers and mains only, no genoas...great idea, Joe. It's been floated before, to much objection from genoa diehards. But if we're losing racers, maybe they'll reconsider. This past summer I used a blade, a genoa height jib. It was a bit slower than genoas in winds of 5/6 MPH, and increasingly slower as wind speed decreased from there. But it was every bit as quick or faster in winds 6/7 and up. The great advanatge is never having to worry whether it is too windy or not for the genoa. It's also less costly to have one foresail instead of two. And, of course, we all know that Rob Anderson has been winning consistently with his jib against genoas. In other words, given the small speed advantage of genoas, aren't the benfits of jib only worth serious consideration?
Anyone else want to consider Joe's proposal?
