jibs vs. genoas

I see Cal has posted similar personal findings to mine that in light moderate wind and up, the jib is every bit as fast as a genoa or faster. I might point out that at an Idaho regatta this fall with about 8 San Juans, sailed mainly in moderate air, the first two place boats used a jib/blade exclusively (Rob Anderson being one), while all others used genoas. While it is reasonably assumed that genoas help through chop, at this regatta the jibs plowed ahead nonetheless.

Although I should say that my blade proved slower not only upwind in light air, but on close reaches too even in moderate air, it also had another advantage: it was easier to double slot with a spinnaker.
