Excellent comments on PHRF. Especially important was Bart's recognition that San Juan racers probably, on the whole, have boats in better race condition than many competitors. Another factor to consider is that those who race one-design learn how to get their boats closer to max speed than do those who mainly race handicap. Even sailmakers have better tuning guides and advice for one-design boats. The simple fact is that the San Juan 21 is rated about right at 252, based on all objective data. It's one advantage over many other boats, though, is that it can sail to its rating in every wind condition. For years I raced a C&C 27 MK lll that was incredible in light air, but a dog in heavy. I raced a Shark 24 which was incredible in a blow, but couldn't stay with San Juan 21s in light air, despite giving time to them.
We may have to resign ourselves to San Juans getting closer PHRF scrutiny, as we get these boats going faster and faster. It won't be fair, but it's reality. But I believe there's a limit to how much a rating can be changed over a specific period of time. 229, I would assume, is well beyond the change limit.
Anyhow, last I had people complaining about my rating (for my Shark) I dealt with it thusly: I joined them and bought a San Juan. Best sailing decision I ever made. In other words, the heck with ratings; sail one-design.
