There are 4 controls on a chute. The uphaul sets the pole position above the deck. The downhaul keeps the pole from going vertical when the chute gets loaded. The sheet is free running from a turning block at the stern and is used to control the shape and position of the chute.
The Guy is the same as a sheet except it is passed through the eye of the pole and is positioned so as to place the pole opposite the boom.
When you jibe the easy way on a small boat is to end for end the pole. Unhook from the mast and hook the sheet through the eye. Unhook the old guy and hook the pole to the mast.
On large boats dipping the pole is easiest when the pole is the size of a tree and quite heavy.
Moving the pole to a new position will usually require slacking the downhaul.
