Use of a gin pole is about the best way I know. www.boatus.com/goodoldboat/maststepping.htm describes it pretty well. The hand rails on the SJ 21 are the perfect attachment points for the bridle which is what keeps the mast and gin pole from swaying sideways. Raising it by yourself will still require some muscle so you might make it easy on yourself by using one of the genoa sheet winches. My gin pole is less elegant than some, consisting of two two by fours bolted together to form a T beam, but it works OK. Al Paul
