Depth Instruments

I have planned for a while to install depth measurement on my SJ21, and have read with interest some of the e-mails posted which seem to say that inside-the-hull sensors epoxied just in front of the keel seem to work best and transom mounts don't.

Something which I don't believe has been discussed - but which I have been researching - is the pros and cons of a 'fishfinder' vs digital readout. If you stick to the 'shallow' units(ie not the 600ft+ units), the price difference is not great. Features like alarms seem to be on both.

Does anyone have a source of more info or practical experience with both? I tapped the keel on a rock ridge in our lake this year(no damage) so even my wife agrees to the expense of a unit now!

Thanks
