NC - PHRF rating

The NC PHRF committee met 8/23/06 to consider a rating appeal of the SJ 21 here in NC. After much discussion, the decision was made to create a separate One-Design rating and assign a different number for the PHRF configuration. The One-Design rating is 252 and will follow the class rules as an All-Sails boat. Only class sails, keel down at all times, just like any National regatta. The PHRF number is 240 (provisional)and allows 155% genoa, 180% spinnaker (class is 173%), unrestricted sailcloth choices, headfoils, moving the keel while racing (the boat must still be "self-righting" as stated in the PHRF handbook), virtually any equipment you wish that might be restricted by class rules. As has been stated before, the genesis of the appeal is due to small fleets, big rating spreads and less than stellar boat prep on the part of the some of the other competitors...2 committee members are SJ 21 owners and vigorously argued our points and aired the concerns posted here. In the end, the compromise was suggested in a letter from another SJ21 owner who has the equipment to sail his boat in either configuration. At least we got to chose how much flesh to lose.....the final result will probably affect a small number of boats and has no affect on class equipped boats.
