The 252 rating for class "All Sails" appears to be safe and sound in South Carolina and Lake Norman in NC (jib and main is 262).When starting with J-24's, Cat 27, Melges 24, we get killed because of the dirty air that occurs after the start as the yachts with longer water lines sail over us even when they are poorly sailed. Occasionally, the times when I place high is when there is a large wind shift we hit or if when the winds become stronger (very rare occurrence) after the faster yachts finish.
The races where we are very competitive are in "Pursuit Races." This is where the slower boats start first and theoretically, if all the boats are sailed at optimum, they should all finish at the same time. This type of race helps us because the slower boats have a chance to sail in clear air for most of the race and the faster boats have to sail through our dirty air although we generate much less dirty air than they do. RC's like this kind of race because it makes scoring real easy.
Cheers, TA
