Trailer tires, tires in General

I use to do tire testing for a brand of motorcycle tires and have experience with car tires a well.

The most important thing to keep your tires in good shape is to keep them inflated to the proper pressure.

Low pressure causes excessive temperatures to build up and that will wear out a tire, cause tread separation, Belt separation, and other nasty things. one of these can be the trailer shimming side to side. Once you arrive at where ever you are headed, feel your tires, they should be a little warm, but not hot.

Look at the side wall of your trailer tires. Somewhere it will tell the maximum inflation pressure. For trailers, set it to that maximum. Even if your rig isn't carrying much weight for the tires, over pressure won't cause any problems. If your trailer is bouncing too much you can drop the pressure a little.

It's also a good idea to pump up your rear tire pressures a couple of lbs. on the tow rig as it will be carrying extra pounds while pulling your boat.
