Fairing

When the fairing showed up here on the right coast I asked then Chief Measurer Bill McClure about it. Bill said (correct me if I'm wrong Bill) that if someone wanted to drag that thing under their boat and think it made them go faster then he didn't have a problem with it. This was in answer to my specific question about the rules saying the outline of the hull shape should not be changed. I felt the gasket was certainly in violation of that statement, Bill didn't. Bill soon left his position as Chief Measurer and Mike Chesser assumed this thankless position, (see Bill for clarification). I asked Mike his opinion on it and got a very correct answer that it had already been ruled on....but that it might have to be revisited. I haven't heard any firther discussion or recommnedation from Mike since. So here we are.

I object to the fairing for the already stated detrimentral effect it has on class building and participation. My answer is if you want an experimental class go join one, go find one, this isn't it. ( Although history my show I'm wrong here). But getting to specifics I object because the fairing violates the rule that the metal keel gasket trim piece must remain in place around the keel opening. ALL THE WAY AROUND THE OPENING, INCLUDING FRONT AND BACK. Damn it, my keel box has those annoying strips at the front AND the back and I would expect every boat I race against to have the same. They do not, I've checked. So, I am specifically asking the Chief Measurer to rule on the need to have the metal trim piece (or its equivalent) on the boat and completely around the keel opening, front and back. Are we going to keep the underbody outline of the SJ21 the same for all boats or not? What say you Mike Chesser? Thanks, Mike #1282 Winever.
