S.J. 21 fixed keels

Steve, While working as a Clark Boat Company employee during one summer in the early 70's I saw a San Juan 21 mounted with a fixed keel on the assembly line. As this was totally new I asked some questions and was told by the supervisor that it was a modified San Juan 24 keel. Apparently there was a stock 24 keel and one which was available called a "low n slow" version. I don't know why they called it that as it was supposed to be a faster design. Anyway, there is one being sailed each year at a local regatta here in the east but the owner doesn't seem to be up to speed with the rest of the group. Not necessarily an indication of the boat's ability. This also has some other type of fixed keel; not either of the Clark Factory's designs. So who knows? It was believed by the Clark's to have the potential to be faster (point higher upwind) than the swing keel versions but no feedback was ever availablle to my knowledge. Mike
