subject:Swing Keel Vs fixed keel
NC PHRF decided to rate the fixed keel at 249, since it doesn't have a keel gasket. Now, they have decided to lower the SanJuan21 rating to 240 if you want to sail a PHRF configuration. 252 if you want to sail class configuration. Since the class does not accept the fix keel version as a class boat, I will sail at the current 249, as the boat is not considered a class boat, by the class.By the way, 3 seconds a mile is nothing, one bad tack, so it would be very difficult to measure a difference. I have been beat just as often by swing keels, as I have beat them. The fix keel is much shorter, and sweeps back at the same angle as a swing, so you would think the shorter keel would have less performance upwind, less leading edge, and better downwind, less drag. Since the class really looks down on the fix keel, don't expect many to show up at regattas to do a speed test.
Talk about a huge cabin on a 21' boat, the fix keel markII is second to none there!
