subject:PHRF Rating
I have a PHRF rating from Long Island / Hudson River area. with my 150 Mylar I get a 252. PHRF ratings are based on using a 150. Now the $64,000 question. Does the Class 130% get a 6 second adjustment, or should it get a 3 second adjustment as it is realy between a 137% and 139%?The only reason I paid for my PHRF was to argue with the PHRF handicapper about the benefits of using Time on Time with wide spreads. Actually the spreads they race here are way out of wack. I could find myself racing against a J-27 ..... yea right. And they wonder why smaller boats drop out after a year or two.
If you are racing with spreads greater then 30 secs/mile the advantage shifts significantly to the faster ( lower PHRF ) boat. This advantage gets exagerated even more, if there is a current greater then .6 kts.
If you race PHRF with wide spreads -- the boats on the upper # ranges are nothing more then cannon fodder. You are just a contributor to the "big boat trophy fund".
