subject:Fiberglass Foward Keel Fairing
Numerous people have asked me to comment regarding the legality of the fiberglass forward keel fairing assembly developed by Randy Blair in 2002. This assembly was proposed as an alternative to the original forward polyester keel gaskets and metal gasket retaining strips referenced in the Class Specifications.Bill McClure, former Class Measurer, DID rule this fairing assembly as acceptable for use based on review of design drawings and prototype samples of the fairing. Having said this, the fairing remains approved for use in the Class Association, WHEN USED AS SHOWN IN THE DESIGN DRAWINGS AND PROTOTYPES.
Why do I highlight this fact? I was actually with Bill McClure in 2002 at an early regatta as he considered the design and drawings. One point he considered was the replacement of existing metal gasket strips. It is important to note that the original drawings from Randy SPECIFICALLY show "the gasket is about the same thickness as the stock metal strips and replace them where applicable." Bill was aware of this, and his approval considered this "substitution" meeting the specification requirement of '"Original" size and shape gasket battens...be in place..."' per Specifications 3.4, Article IV, Par 4.
HOWEVER, IT IS NOT ALLOWABLE TO FURTHER FAIR THE BLAIR ASSEMBLY INTO THE BOTTOM OF THE BOAT. The fiberglass forward keel assembly may be glued or screwed to the bottom of the boat, but further fairing of the mounting flange edges (which replace the original metal gasket strips) IS NOT ALLOWED. A boat so modified violates Specifications 3.2, Article II, Par 1..."No attempt to alter the hull will be tolerated", and accordingly ruled in violation of the Specifications.
I will provide additional photos of the assembly and copies of the drawings in an upcoming Jibsheet.
