John:There is a decent drawing of the keel housing and locking pins in the Mk II manual that might help illustrate what happens. Go to the Maintenance, Repair and Rigging links on this forum's front page then go to Manuals and download the Mk II manual pdf. Page 7 or 8 or something.
It's very straightforward once you've done it a time or two. I did a popular retrofit - I replaced the stock winch with a brake winch (bought from Northern Tools for about $40) which allows one to lower the keel without worrying about letting go and having the handle spin around like the prop on a WWI airplane.
