I made an a-frame gin pole that works great. If you have the right blocks lying around it won't cost much at all. Rather than tortuously trying to describe it in words I've thrown a few photos and drawings together in a PDF which can be accessed at:

I include everything but an actual photo of it on the boat in use, but the drawing does that fairly well.
