subject:Advice: Valuation for insurance
I'm wondering if anyone has advice on insurance for the SJ21... prices in the For Sale/Sold section appear to range from $1000 to $6000 on this website, depending on condition and add-ons. I'd like to have it insured for peace of mind, and because local marinas in AZ and Sonora apparently like guests to be insured... not something I thought about up in the San Juan islands. I got a quote from Boat US based on $3,000 value fairly cheap, but wonder if that might be too low??? I'm not planning on having any losses, but I would sure sleep easier if I had it insured to an appropriate amount. Also, I really don't know what it is "worth" in terms of money-- I bought it from family. NOTE: I have no interest in selling her! :-)I'd appreciate any advice you sailors can give on how to valuate and insure Silver Heels; I love sailing her and want to keep her protected.
The boat: Silver Heels is sail/hull number 868, built in 1974. Had a soft spot in deck repaired/faired by previous owner. 6 HP Johnson outboard, and trailer with newly packed bearings and new lights all around, in good shape. Roller furling on foresail, has original Main and Jib, in good condition, and UK sails 155 or so genoa in good to very good shape. Rigged for and has spinnaker, little used (for now...). All lines lead aft, mast raising line mounted along port gunwhale. She's got a kick-up rudder (just rebuilt), and a custom bulkhead/dropdown table starboard of the mast belowdecks, good electrical panel with lights (two cabin, p/s/a running lights, anchor light), 12v accessory plug, VHF, and amplifier/marine speakers (for iPod), new deep cycle battery with trickle charger and solar panel. (Thanks to my brother the electrician) and a sink not completely hooked up yet (I'm still getting over my fear of cutting holes above the water line, still very afraid of thru-hull fittings-- I was a submariner in the USN and we don't like holes!) Equipment includes all cushions, fenders, whisker poles, oar, swim ladder, saftey stuff (flares/extinguishers, etc), and a box of miscellaneous hardware, fasteners, etc. No forward hatch, no pulpit (though I would love both).
Is $3,000 too low, or too high?
List your motor separately on a marine policy; possibly the trailer as well? - Jim
