One of the more likely reasons you'll use your insurance is to replace the mast. That can be $1000 for the bare pole and you do all the installations. Having a marine yard do it can be more like $2000 or even $4000 for other boats. So even though you can buy a SJ for $3000 in the marketplace the sum of the repair parts is $6000 to $10,000 if you need to replace a set of racing sails and mast and all the labor to outfit a racing boat or even a well set up cruiser. Outboards are $1500 and up. So I'd sure consider getting a lot more insurance if you can. The premium isn't that much more. When I lost my SJ-24 mast some years ago, I didn't feel like spending the next month learning how and installing all the large number of fittings needed. I hired Port Gardner to finish everything since the insurance was paying most of it. Gene did a great job by the way. I kept sailing on weekends in the SJ21 and he built my new mast. My insurance was for "replacement cost minus deductible".
