Ahoy!

I obtained a '79 San Juan 21 in November, and am slowly getting it ready to go. It has sat in the seller's yard for 7 years, and the trailer axle was so rusted I had to jack up the trailer and put a new axle underneath it before I could drag it home. I've now put new leaf-springs,new tires and new lights on the trailer.

The boat itself just needs minor repair. The windows leak when it rains. Ideas on the best way to reseal them? The bolt holding the pulley to the main cleat broke, but I think I've figured a way to fix it with an eye bolt. However, I did notice on the forum that some have gone to another system of controlling the main, so if someone has a stock main cleat out there, I would be interested in buying it.

One of the plates on the side of the keel trunk had come off, and the screw holes have wallowed out. I think I will drill new holes in the plate, a little closer to the center, and then drill pilot holes into the fiberglass. Then I'll glue the plate to the keel trunk. Sound reasonable?

The tiller is solid, but the grains in the wood are exposed. I think I can just sand it down and refinish it. Before I launch her in "real" water, I'm gonna take her to a neighborhood lake and be sure she floats well, and that the keel lowers and retracts like it should.

Two questions:

1. In the V berth area, there is a round threaded cover that opens to the bilge. Inside a see two pipes coming forward and emptying into that area. What is it, and does what I describe sound normal?

2. My model has the stroage comparment in the stern of the cockpit. Inside are positive and negative cables. If you use a battery, is that where it goes? A typical car battery or deep-cyle, or something else.

3. OK, I lied--three questions--what about outfitting with an anchor light on the top of the mast for overnighting? How's the best way to do that? BTW--I'm naming her "Java Jibe"--takeoff on the forties song "Java Jive." I'm a coffee hound, so I thought that was appropriate.

Can't wait to get her out.
