Sometimes these guys ( or gals) on the PHRF committees are ......

Well anyway. Our region rated Catalina Tall Masts the SAME as the standard Catalina 25 rig. 237 ( the highest in any region) When I complained and sent a listing showing that all regions which had both versions rated, all (23) rated the tall mast faster --- except ours (YRALIS). I was told to purchase a new boat!

I went to PHRF US. They said I had to formally request a review of the boats in question through the region. Which I did. The handicapper then requested that I provide data. I told them to look at other regions. They finally dropped the Catalina TM rating by 6 secs a mile to 231.

The Catalina 25's still have a favorable number from YRALIS ( the highest of any region.) Back in 1985 the standard Catalina 25 were rated at 222 and the SJ 21 252. Now the Catalina 25's are rated at 237 and the SJ 21 remains at 252. A 15 sec/mile gain.

It is an imperfect science. But it is better to give a boat too low of a number as you louse it up for one boat. Give a boat too high of a number and you ruin it for the whole fleet.
