keel

Yes, you definately need a brake type winch. There are several sources mentioned in the archives. When fully raised, the keel will project about 3-4 inches below the hull. That helps the boat track and turn. While trailering, you should relieve the tension on the winch cable and allow the keel to ride on the roller on the trailer. If you trailer with the keel held up by the winch, you run the risk of breaking the pulley off of the top of the keel or damaging the cable or winch.
