Stuck Keel

Over the years of working on SJ 21's I have had two boats with stuck keels. In both cases there was no obvious reason for the keels to stick in the up position. Both boats had one thing in common, they were sitting on brand new trailors. What I discovered is that the trailor dealer had positioned the trailor bunks so low on the trailor, that the keel was shoved way up into the trunk causing it to stick. The solution in both cases was to simply raise the trailor bunks up about four inches with some spacers under the bunks.

It doesn't take much of anything in the keel trunk to make the keel stick. It is a good idea to rinse out the keel trunk with a garden hose every once in a while.
