snow loads on mast and tarp

Wil:

I had some tugging on my mast last year for the same reasons as you describe, and this year I came up with a sturdier alternative.

I bought 2 12' 2x4s and bolted them together at the ends. At this junction I also bolted in (same bolt) about a 3' 2x4. This structure replaces the mast on the boat as a tarp support. The 3' strut has a piece of wood 2' x6" x 1/2" (and old piece of cedar fencing) screwed on to the bottom as a foot. This foot rests on some styrofoam pieces, and is roughly just aft of the mast step.

This thing isn't straight - it peaks up at the junction a foot or two because of the strut. The tarp on the boat, then, has a peak like a tent which further helps snow and snowmelt slide and drain off. I feel pretty confident that I won't have the same problems as last year.
