lightning protection

they're usually not a problem but when they get in the way I use a paddle to push them away - oh, you don't mean those pesky hard chined things?

For the shocking type, I try to saddle up next somebody with a taller mast. Years ago, and if I get some time I'll try to find it, there was an article in the Jibsheet by an engineering type who did some calculations about how much surface area would be needed to dissipate an "average" lightning strike. As I remeber we don't have enough hull surface even if coated with copper plating. Best thing is stay away from the mast and rigging.
