If you are thinking about the Channel Islands, I would suggest taking the San Juan 23. San Juan 21's do not like big waves, and you will find them in the ocean. Some days the trip would be a piece of cake, and some days it would be life threating. The next land to the west is Hawaii, and beyond that Japan. This allows quite a bit of fetch. Winds are normally not high, the operative word being normally.
