SAILORS TAKE NOTICE!
The Raleigh Parks and Recreation invites you to attend a sailboat racing series at Lake Wheeler Park this winter. The series of race weekends takes place at Lake Wheeler, off Lake Wheeler Road, 6 miles south of the Raleigh beltline. This race series is governed by Lake Wheeler Park, and all sailboats that carry a US Sailing Portsmouth number are invited; http://www.ussailing.org/portsmouth/pyindex.asp
This series is designed to invite the sailor who knows the basics of sailing and would like to advance their knowledge of sailboat racing. Provisions will be made in order to support the entry-level racer in their pursuit of learning the rules and tactics of this sport.
The series starts January 2009 and run through March 2009. The time will be Saturday, from 12-3. The courses will be dictated by weather conditions. US Sailings "Rules of Racing 2009-2012" will be used. Sailing Instructions will be available at the Race Committee Meeting.

The fee for this series will be $25.00 per skipper. Guests are encouraged, and invited, but only paying entries will be scored for trophies. Registration can be mailed in advance or accepted at the Race Committee Meeting.TROPHIES
Trophies will be awarded at the end of the series based on the number of boats that sail the minimum number of races as follows:
3 = 1st place 10-12 = 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th places
4-6 = 1st, 2nd places 13-15 = 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th places
7-9 =1st, 2nd, 3rd places 16+ = to be determinedCancelled Races Lake Wheeler is a sheltered body of water, well suited for winter sailing. The race course will not be over 200 yards from the docking area. Race committee does have the right to cancel races if the air/water temperature combination is too low to afford safe sailing. High winds will also be monitored. Makeup race days will be the Sunday after the cancelled race (next day). Boats may be left in the boat trailer parking lot on their trailers overnight for this purpose.
Ample parking, launching (beach and ramp) and docking is available. Bathrooms are heated. (no showers). The Lake Staff will have a rescue boat available in case of emergencies on the water.
