crew limit, barberhaulers

Vince - Section 2.7 Article VII #1 states "The number of persons allowed in a San Juan 21 in a race shall be two or more." The next section states that the number of crew shall be consistent in all races of the series.

Most of the boats around here have twings/barberhaulers that pull the jib sheet forward and outboard for reaching or move the spinnaker guy forward for better control of the pole. The easiest way to rig them is to substitute a bow shackle for the clevis pin in the upper shroud chainplate and put a swivel bullet block on the shackle. Lead a small diameter line thru the block with a snap, ring, or small snatch block - Lewmar/Holt makes a nice 27mm model - to capture your jib sheet or guy and mount a cam cleat in a convenient place near the cockpit. Make sure your substitute shackle has the same diameter pin as the clevis you're replacing as that will be taking standing rigging loads. Reaching with the jib is greatly enhanced as the sail will be more correctly trimmed top to bottom and the slot is opened for better flow. With a spinnaker, the twing will allow you have much better control of the pole without constant adjustment of the foreguy. Looking forward to seeing you in June!
