Spectra or other for backstay connection

I'm in the process of replacing my backstay adjuster. I'm rigging a split backstay with a fiddle block combo on the port side, which will attache to a line that runs through a block attached to the backstay and back down to the starboard attachment point. My question is could I use spectra or some other high strength line to accomplish this or do I have to use cable (1/8"?). My thought is that spectra would not only cost less to rig than wire, but also be easier. Since there is no existing adjustable backstay, I would also need to purchase the wire swags on each end, which don't come cheap.
