sj21 manuals and national committee

Christian, I can kind of understand your feeling that there's a bit of extortion in the expectation that one shell out $25 for class membership in order to access the updated class manual. That is, you can reason that it isn't worth $25.

On the other hand, that the class survive is in the interests of every San Juan 21 owner and racer. The class sustains the value of the boats, ensures parts remain available, keeps information current and accessible (this web site being the prime source), maintains spirit, conmraderie and racing.

Which implies that the simple $25 a year fee for class membership is an intrinsic and vital sum to keep the class going, and therefore maintain all its attendant benefits.

That being the case, how do we motivate people to join and then keep membership current? That is, if everything membership offers is available for free, why join?

To members this is undoubtedly self evident. But perhaps it isn't to a non member, especially those who don't race and seldom associate with other San Juan sailors, this board aside. I'm not certain that I'd join, were I a non racer and living without a local San Juan fleet with which to associate.

I suppose we could, as a compromise, sell the updated manual to non members for a, say, $10 fee.
