subject: How is the Jib attached to the bow bracket?

Another newbie rigging question. How should the tack on the jib be attached to the bow bracket? The sails that came with my boat had a short piece of 1/4" line tied to the tack and it looked like it was simply tied in place.

Should a shackle or snap shackle be used?

A follow up question, is should the main jib be attached as close as possible or should some spacing be put in place?
