subject:6 HP (57 lbs) or 8 HP (84lbs) decision time
I'm buying a new motor to replace a older 4HP 15" short shaft (40LBs). I'm looking at the Tohatsu 6 HP and the 8/9.9 (same engine overall). My trade-off I am weighing in my mind is the weight of the motor with respect to lifting it on and off the mount versus the extra power I'd get with the 8 HP. I know the 8 won't move the boat much faster than the 6, but I would get the extra muscle. My home waters are S. Florida where I need to deal with some strong current in the ocean channels and inter-coastal. The 6 HP is going to be easier to lift and put less strain on the bracket, etc.
I'd welcome some thoughts and guidance, especially from folks that have to deal with stronger current and waves. What size is the right choice?
PS- I can keep the light 4 HP around for race days when I need to lighten the load.
