6HP vs 8 HP

I used three engines on my boat: 9.9 Johnson, 5 HP Honda and 15 HP Mercury. With 5 HP I had max speed of 6 mph, almost the same with 9.9 and about 8 mph with 15 HP, so the difference in speed is really not significant. When you say that more powerfull motor have more "muscle", what do you mean? The speed you are getting is the speed relative to water, so the boat will go along the water with the speed of 6 mph under 5 HP and 9.9 HP. If the current is 6 mhp against you, the boat will not move relative to the ground either under 5 HP or under 9.9 HP. Where "muscle" really counts is using the boat for towing. Under 15 HP you can actually tow a kid on a wakeboard, whereas under 5 hp you can tow only a kneeboard, if that matters to you.
