subject:Why to turn off overdrive when towing
Tim,You ask why one would turn off overdrive when towing. It's that the transmission will shift much more often, causing it to overheat - that being the major reason for tranny failure.
Many vehicles owner's manual expressly warns against towing in overdrive. Some have "tow mode", which locks out overdrive and changes shift points.
However, given how light is the Sj 21, chances are your Escape 6 cylinder can tow it well without much risk of overheating --- if you have a tow package with a tranny cooler. If you don't, you might be taking a risk.
