Towing with or without overdrive is all related to engine torque. If you got it, it doesn't matter, if you don't it does. With the big iron 350 and high gear rear end I had in a GM full size van I could pull my san juan through the eastern mountains in overdrive without even working up a sweat. The milage sucked but it really pulled well. Now that I tow with a V6 front wheel drive car I can still tow on the flat open plains in OD but as soon as I hit even some small hills it can't find its place and is shifting, shifting, shifting. The milage is only marginally better towing - 15 vs. 13 but without the boat goes up to 25 vs 15. It's all the shifting that over heats things and causes trouble. If you're worried about the warrenty by all means follow the mfg instructions but when you're driving an 8 year old van with 100+k miles on it, the vehicle isn't worth what it would cost to replace the tanny anyway.
