subject:Thoughts about the class
I don't remember word for word what I was carring on about, but basically those of us who are interested in seeing this class sustain and grow need to be involved. Even starting out at the local level by joining the local fleet and supporting events goes such a long way to getting others to come out. I am amazed at the number of sailors in Eastern N.C. who own a San Juan 21 and would not consider parting with it, but always have some reason for not coming out and participating in events. We need to evaluate the interests of the local San Juan 21 owners and figure out what will motivate them to get their boats out of storage and back on the water. Leading up to the North Americans last year I really wanted to build interest in the event and organized a four part seminar session with the final seminar an "on the water" training a couple weeks before the event. We had a predictable turn out and I was very pleased, but we failed to really bring out some of the boats around town that could easily been competitive with just a little effort. We had a good turn out for the N.A.'s but it could have been stronger if we had more support from San Juan 21 owners in the area. We just need to give them a reason to come out and participate. I will continue to work on this.
