subject:SJ21 Class Assn Exec Comm mtg notes
Greetings (especially SJ 21 Class Assn members)! This past week on 25 January the SJ21 Class Assn Executive Committee held its first meeting involving the new 2009 officers. It was a telephone conference call involving all officers (a listing appears at the end); the purposes were 1) to have an organizational discussion (as a number of members were new to their roles); and 2) to identify (and deal with) what the committee felt were the Assnâ??s priority matters. I would like to summarize the important items that were covered; the full minutes will be posted later on the class website (more on that below).
1) Finance -?? The Assn currently has a balance of $7414.84 on hand.
2) Communications - This topic of communication among members and with prospective new members is a key issue of the Assn.
a. The newsletter, the JibSheet, in its former format is â??stale; the related postage expense has been a major cost item for years. The plan is to have information that had previously appeared in a printed/mailed newsletter be available on-line. (in process)
b. An updated, improved website for the Assn is a must, and as such is a high priority. Jim Hubbard has played a very valuable, and appreciated, role in hosting class-related dialogue on his website; however, the Assn must have a site that is focused on its communication needs. An effort led by Cal Guthrie, Editor/Publicity and Kris Barker, Fleet 1 and Express Matrix CEO, is currently at work on developing and implementing a new Assn website.
3) Non-complying rudder -?? A situation has developed where a rudder has been manufactured and sold to some SJ 21 owners that does not comply with SJ21 class specifications. (The details of this issue have been discussed at some length on this website.) The class by-laws state clearly that if there is a discrepancy in the specifications between the text and the drawings that the text over-rides the drawings. The Executive Committee reviewed and voted unanimously to support the Measurerâ??s recent clarification (found on this website on 1/17/10). Further, the Measurer will provide guidance to local/regional regatta organizers on dealing with any non-compliant rudder; the effort is to encourage participation at events.
4) 2010 Regional/National Regatta preliminary schedule
a. Western Region (also will be the 2010 SJ North Americans) 10-13 June at Canyon Ferry Lake in Montana Host -?? Fleet 5; contact Vice Commodore â??Western Region â?? Bob Abelin(see below)
b. Midwestern Region 26-27 June at Oklahoma City Contact Vice Commodore â?? Midwestern Region -?? Dan Camp (see below)
c. Eastern Region 8-11 July at Lake Carlyle Contact Vice Commodore -?? Eastern Region -?? Felicia Bamer (see below)
Hopefully this summary provides some helpful information to SJ21 Class Assn members that their organization is on a course to make itself relevant and helpful to their sailing needs. I would encourage any members who have specific questions/concerns related to any point made above to contact the Vice-Commodore of their region so that their voices are heard! Thank you for the opportunity to serve in my role during this year. Good sailing!
