subject:various things
First of all, I have been out of communication for a long time. Now that I am fully retired, I intend to fix that. Despite a mediocre beginning (I majored in tennis at Butler!), I pursued a late-blooming interest in plant development by getting a Ph.D. in botany and ultimately wound up at UC Berkeley in the 1960s along with Carol Cass who did her Ph.D. there. We then moved to Edmonton, Alberta (western Canada on east side of Rockies---we get real winters) where I was a professor for 35 years. Carol is not only not retired, but is fully employed as the director of our comprehensive cancer center. That is good because we have become much interested in opera in the last 3 years and go to NY, LA, and Santa Fe, NM for operas---this would not work very well on my income.I have also been involved in Freemasonry, including Scottish Rite in Edmonton. I think my various experiences in Sigma Chi, including attendance at 2 leadership training workshops, helped me deal with all of this pretty well. Recreationally, I do jazz and improvisational piano (mostly for myself, but occasionally for others if I can generate an audience) and wilderness fishing in northern Canada. I am getting back on the tennis court with a few deficiences, like 2 artificial knees and a recently-fixed rotator cuff tear. Fortunately, my opponents have similar issues so everything is OK---the geneal agreement is that we are not afraid or hesitant to use the expression, "nice shot}" rather often.
I just received my new Sigma Chi directory and will contact some of you more directly. I would be delighted to hear responses to this message if you would care to send them.
In hoc, Dave Cass
