Greetings from Cape Cod

Thanks to Jim Hubbard for this terrific web site. The pictures are great. I hope to make it to a future gathering so that I can get in one of them.

I was able to see several of you about eight years ago but the last time I was with many of you was in 1958 when I left for a short four-year Air Force career. It just couldn’t be 48 years ago…could it? Damn.

Following a thirty-nine year career in domestic and international transportation for the Air Force, Procter & Gamble, and Expertrans Consulting, Carol (Koelling, Butler, KKG, ’62) and I retired to Wellfleet, MA on Cape Cod. Our son, Dan, is an attorney in Watchung, New Jersey and our daughter, Amanda, is a designer for the Pioneer Theater, in Salt Lake City, UT.

I have a second career as a volunteer naturalist for Mass Audubon at their Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary. See it at the following web site. http://www.massaudubon.org/index.php We have a thousand acres of salt-marsh and upland with five miles of trails. I put on my Smokey outfit and meet visitors on the trails helping them to connect with nature and the environment. We have about 12,000 visitors from all around world, but mostly the US northeast, each year. The professional staff gives me about 50 hours of training each year in biology, marine biology, botany, ornithology, and what-ever you call all that bug stuff. It is a long way from the business education and career that I enjoyed in my last life.

I’m the token Republican in this Democrat “blue state” environment. If I have anything to prove, it is to show that a conservative can be an environmentalist too. But I’m not openly trying to prove it. It is just nice to be out on the trails, enjoying the ocean, and getting good exercise that will keep me on the trails for many years to come.

I would be thrilled to have any of you coming to New England to come out on the Cape and spend several days with Carol and me. Meanwhile, I hope to see you all in Indianapolis.

In hoc,

Dick French
